The story takes place in the year 1950. A toxin that causes victims to hallucinate, making them feel like they're trapped in a nightmare, has been spread through the black markets of Italy. This dangerous weapon will cause a conflict between groups with differing ideologies.

The protagonist is Tullio Rosati, a charismatic womanizer with a thing for gambling and drinking. He will have to work with other people for the first time in his life, as his investigations unveil mysteries about the toxin and its origins.
