Yoshio is killed in a store robbery, and his soul passes to the afterlife—a feudal society filled with poverty, war, malevolent beasts, and spiritual powers. In a poor village, he discovers that he is not supposed to be in this particular realm of the afterlife, which some may call Asura-Gati or Purgatory, and that his soul's potential is greater than most. A family offers to take him and train him in the sacred arts, but the longer he stays, the more of a danger he becomes to those around him.

Yoshio must decide whether he will pass on to the Heavenly Realm or stay and change things for the better with his newfound power, but the hardships of Purgatory can drive the purest of souls to madness.
