Thanks to the discovery of Ancient Gate Technology in the system Alpha Centauri, humanity gained access to faster than light travel far before they were ready for it. Following the discovery of already existing gates all around the galaxy, a gold rush-like era came into being. In the span of sixty years, they colonized hundreds of stars, with most of them becoming independent. Though when the era ended the corporations that enabled all this, looked towards the settled stars and saw nothing but endless wealth. In an effort to make good of their investments so many years ago, they assembled an army of privateers. Armed to the teeth and their loyalty secured by blood money and the promise of more, these men and women raid planet after planet for theirs and their master's wealth.
