Dungeon Cores are born aware. You might call this 'genetic memories,' but you would be wrong. Cores do not propagate by the sharing of genetic material. The creation of a new Core only requires one instant of willingness by a Core with enough power to do so. In that one instant, the new Core may gain all of the parent core's memories if the parent is willing to share. This is the first way in which Cores gain knowledge. The second is through learning. The third, and very rare method, is the absorption of other Cores. If a parent Core has absorbed another Core, their 'child' Core will have that knowledge too.
The distance of the new Core from the parent Core is random for the most part. During creation, the parent Core can exert some influence over distance by pushing or pulling at the new Core. Most will push new Cores far away. Some will pull new Cores closer though, often to consume them later. Truly ancient Cores are able to push a new Core to other galaxies or beyond.
