Ez's ordinary life turns upside down the day her seven-year-old son becomes a wizard and a swarm of giant hornets tries to murder him. Not only did his father, the man Ez once planned to marry, never tell her about magic, but he also failed to mention his involvement in a trans-national criminal cartel. Ez might have been able to forgive him—if he was alive. Instead, she must rely upon his mother, a cantankerous old witch who always disapproved of Ez, to help her and her son assimilate into the secret magical society that rules the world.
