The young witch Bekka returns to Eganene. Her friends Elisabeth and Jamie, and her grandmother, Agatha, follow in her wake.

Peter, the Family's Employee, has set in motion events he cannot undo. He searches for Bekka, as does the rest of the Family. She is the last Radcliff, the hope of the Rebellion, and his enemy.
