Cortland Finiron has survived his tenth Granting, but at great cost. His best friend and mentor is dead, murdered by an assassin who suggests a new game is afoot in the pyramidal city of Infinzel. Now, Cortland must balance his quest for vengeance with the demands of his ageless king and the training of a replacement champion with secrets of her own.

Meanwhile, the wish of a death cult has devastated the sleepy farm town of Ambergran. Uicha de Orak, the son of retired pirates, suddenly finds himself adrift in the dying town that never accepted him. When the cult's leader takes a personal interest in Uicha, he must decide where his true loyalties lie.

And, on the sea, the mermaid outlaw Red Tide is offered a deal: survive the next Granting and receive clemency for her crimes. But in a contest where her people are hunted like animals, Red Tide will need more than an enchanted harp to escape alive.

These characters, and others, will have their fates intersect at the 62nd Granting, a week-long fight to the death where wishes come at the cost of blood.
