The gods have long been a part of the lives of all highlanders, Uzca included. Ten years ago Uzca was deemed too young to participate in the Gifting, a religious ceremony where the young members of the highlands society are given fantastic powers by the gods themselves. Now twenty-two years old, Uzca hopes that he's given a power that can help people and make his father proud.

Given a quest by his god, Uzca must leave his village to discover the truth behind the mystery of his lost family. When that quest leads to the heart of the Empire, Uzca will have to confront old secrets and long held prejudices to find out the truth behind events more than four hundred years in the making.
