Simple directions allow anyone to open a portal to another world. Story begins as fairly hard SF, but there is a gradual breakdown of scientific explanation as the story progresses and science attempts (and fails) to explain most of what is happening.

What to expect: Starts out as exploration, research, and many-faction base building. Evolves (VERY gradually) into epic fantasy as logic fails and magic grows.
