Raziel is a child of the Ashen's Curse, sharing the same blood as the monstrosities who'd slain innocent lives as the thirst for bloodshed was in their nature. At least, that is what the surface dwellers believed of those of Ashen blood, compelling them to banish the Ashen from the surface world. For centuries, those of Ashen heritage lived in peace with one another beneath the surface until war inevitably tore them apart. They began killing their own like cattle, perhaps showcasing that violence was in fact inherited through their blood.
