Freeman is a former lawyer, judge, and cop who fell into bad times, bad enough that he had to escape from Earth to the Asteroid Belt. A friend back on Earth helped get him the job he has now, acting as a private detective and personal enforcer in one of the larger asteroids in the belt between Mars and Saturn. The gravity there is half that of Earth's, but the crime hasn't changed at all.
