After 60 years of fighting and losing a war against extra- terrestrial threats in the form of monsters pouring from rifts and buoyed only by the presence of the System, Mankind's defenders, the Hunters launch a desperate vicious counter attack and win but not without serious casualties.
The hero of humanity and the number one Hunter delivers the killing blow to the Overseer but has his throat ripped out in a revenge stroke. Bleeding out and struggling to speak, the hero of humanity dies, his blood flowing onto what would come to be called the blood drenched fields. And with his death and the slaying of the Overseer, the all powerful system departs, leaving humanity as the victors. It was over.
With resources abundant in the form of monster cores containing abundant energy and rare metals never before seen, mankind finally has a chance to rebuild and they look to their Hunters for guidance. But there was a problem.
The Hunters once touted as the Saviours and Stewards of humanity broke after the departure of the system, to lose all that power and the protection the system offered to the hunters minds was too much for most.
The powers that were, rise up in the power vacuum and create the Global Defense Force a multinational institution that now governed the world.
Powerless after the departure of the all powerful system, the hunters are swept aside and left behind. Feeling betrayed, the few functioning Hunters rise up and are firmly and viciously put in their place by ordinary men and women wielding weapons built from the Hunters past kills.
At 13, Dorian was chosen by the system as a Hunter and was on the blood drenched fields the day Hunters won humanity it's victory. An insignificant level 5 fighter fighting among monsters and gods in human guise. And yet somehow he survived. Thinking his future is set, Dorian watches in horror as the legends of humanity broke and were cast aside by the very people they bled and died for. Eleven years later, the fear of the system and it's monsters ever returning is all but a distant thought. The GDF is reclaiming vaste swathes of land from the remaining monsters and Hunters have become a relic of the past and are on the very bottom rung of society.
A surprise discovery by Dorian hints at the very real possibility that the system was never done with earth. After all in a game after the prologue comes the main game, devoid of instructions.
