The fledgling technology can only send a single person on a one-way journey back into the past. When the portal shuts there will be no communication and no coming back.

Even then, Matilda was an enthusiastic volunteer. Eager to impart her futuristic knowledge upon 12th Century England so a future civilisation, that she will never meet, might mitigate the inevitable celestial cataclysm.
