On Ddeaer, everyone possesses a legacy, an inborn magical ability that can range from the incredible to the useless, from tripling the size of a caster's mana-garden, to being seen as a friend by bees. When Malachi's coming of age reveals him to have a moderately useful ability, he expects to settle down with a normal job, and live a normal life. When he instead receives an offer of apprenticeship from the esteemed Occultist Orykson, he jumps at the chance to learn. His elation quickly turns into dread when it becomes apparent that Orykson doesn't seem to have much interest in teaching him until he's already reached the highest level of mastery with several spells and advanced his mana-garden to the level of a Spellbinder – a feat that takes most people at least three years to manage… and which Orykson expects him to do in just one. Left with a handful of spells, instruction from an old woman he's never met, and a sharply tailored suit, Malachi has to navigate his way to excellence or risk failing to meet Orykson's expectations, a fate that will leave him in financial ruin for years to come.
