By day Jason Whitlock is a schoolteacher struggling to get out of debt and to find a woman who makes him happy, but at night in his dreams he is a budding hero, with emerging powers in the Midas Game, a game where the healthier and wealthier Jason is in real life, his strength and wealth are multiplied in the game.

Only now Jason must hide his identity at the rescue mission while defying the gorilla mayor, the badger head of the mob, and a demonic cult led by Hermana Flor, who is making New York's homeless fight to entertain the city's rich. Aided by Corporal Johnny Wright, a veteran of the Harlem Hellfighters, the two men go for the city's money and a stockpile of gold.
