Centuries after all men on Earth died out in a mysterious event, women continue to survive by cloning themselves. Despite the necessity of the process, fifteen-year-old Haze resents the implication that, as a theta-iteration clone, she is just one step on the way to her eventual omega's perfect self-realization. She wants to end her line, meaning not birth the next iteration. That way she can live for herself.
When news appears claiming scientists at last have created a baby man, and her school roommate appears to be involved in an anti-male cult, Haze learns there is more to her decision than she could have imagined. Only by embracing her family herstory and the responsibility of a future other than her own will she find out the value of the lines and what it takes to forge a new path among them.
