The Great War split the world into two parts, one of which is habitable and the other infested with poisonous gases. The habitable half is protected by a shield that draws energy from a glass-like mineral called sclenite. Near the shield lives a nation of glaziers who are the only ones who are able to mine it. However, they pay a high price for it. The energy field of the shield condemns the glaziers to live in medieval conditions, the people of the lowlands enslave them, and the mining of sclenite causes disease and disfigurement.
Thirteen-year-old Ilan is one of the few born without deformities and, in addition, with a rare gift — she can listen to sclenite. But In order not to be taken away from her family, she pretends to be a boy from childhood and hides in the mask and robes that glaziers must wear as a sign of subservience.
This is her story.
Her memory.
