The rise of creatures whose power put all forms of existence in check almost led to the extinction of mankind. The nightmare ended when humans learned that monsters, when defeated, could be refined into Cores, which give access to Qi.

In order to regain their dominance, cultivators formed large sects, so that never again would monsters plague human life.

Thus, slayers were born.
