Haytham Groce is your typical farmer's son. He enjoys the monotonous, simple, and rewarding life a farmer leads, and he wants nothing more than to be the best heir to his father's fortune that he can be. Of course, life gets in the way of everything. His father much prefers his younger brother, Chance, whose so strong in the Talent he can make trained warriors tremble. There's also the adorable youngest sibling, Yissa, who can easily make up for Chance's lack of ability with numbers at the tender age of eight.

So when a wandering priest reveals him to be a silent-soul (someone completely lacking in the Talent), he's forced to consider a career change under the threat of slavery. Of course, if he wants to get out of that, he'll need a plan, and he isn't considered the sharpest tool in the shed.

The world is a fusion of several cultures (including medieval steppe culture, China, and ancient Greece), and it features both world-changing events and an intricate magic system. Haytham, and by extension his friends that he meets along the way, need to fight tooth and nail for every step forward.
