Caleb knew his life was weird. There were only so many times you could spend a space-journey immersed in a fictional game world before you just knew your life to be weird. But an astrogator only needs to do so much. Calculate a few numbers, and then be on-call in case of any undetected small object that was going to collide with the ship. Even so, few people had the intuition for the calculations, and few people could entertain themselves for the multi-year journeys that dominated space-travel, even with all the entertainment options available on a space-ship specially equipped to draw an astrogator's attention. So, Caleb had a very reliable job, and if his life was weird, well... people still paid him for it.

This is not a high-stakes adventure. It is someone figuring out what their life can be like, in a future not so far away. They just so happen to do it through a video game set in another future, somewhat farther away.
