When Bryldi comes of age, her bloodstone—the gem-like housing of her soul—will determine who she can be. But as foundling, to earn her place at the Icewatch, the Second Kingdom outpost she calls home, she must rise above her peers. So on her Choosing Day, she does just that—she chooses—not to join the gatherers as her bloodstone dictates, but the casters, the revered cliff-fishers of the outpost.

Ignoring the facts of a disfigured right foot, and a paralysing fear of heights, being rejected by the Keeper doesn't bear thinking about. Aside from crushing her dreams, it would mean separation from best friend, Ghen, not to mention an insufferable (and likely permanent) grin on rival Ona's face.

But when Bryldi decides to unravel the truth of her past, defying the Keeper in the process, she unearths a devastating secret, prompting her to make a careless boast. With guild-trials set to begin, a bitter alliance seems like a ray of hope. But as winter isolates the Icewatch from the outside world, the enemies Bryldi didn't know she had—mortal and otherwise—converge on the outpost with deadly intent.
