As with most people, the Apocalypse did not treat Alan well. He was beaten, tortured, and enslaved, losing his one and only love as well. He seemed to go mad with reckless abandon, with absolute disregard for his life, but he survived. He survived to live and get his hands on a mysterious stone, one that could possibly bring back the love of his life, and give meaning back into his own.
