Unlike his father and brother, Lyle Margrave wasn't blessed with power when the Towers rose outside the population centers of the world seventeen years ago. However, with his father imprisoned and his brother killed in the Fall of New York, he is alone in helping his mother to provide for their household and get his sister Helen through her last couple years of college. Quitting his job probably wasn't the smartest move to this end, but he wasn't helping anyone as a mistreated secretary. This is followed by even more bad luck in the form of a beating from an Empowered directly outside his girlfriend's apartment and an ultimatum not to return.

Lyle's fate of being doomed to drudgery is altered, though, when he steps into a Secret Gate on a dangerous whim and a figure from out of Greek mythology gives him the opportunity to make a difference. Something's different about his gift, though, and if he's not careful, it could get him killed.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm writing this for fun, to learn, and to entertain. I hope you enjoy it and please let me know what you think if you see something that could be better or that you really like. It is seriously flawed--this is my first publicly released work--and I'm aware of this, but, like I said, I would like my writing to mature and eventually I want to be a great storyteller. I may end up rewriting parts later in order to improve it for future readers, depending on how I feel about it further into the story.

Chapter Schedule: One more chapter (the last of "book 1") will be released on the 25th at 9pm CDT, then I'll be taking a break from posting for a few days. The next chapter (the first of "book 2") will be released on Wednesday or Thursday (the 29th or 30th of May) at the regular time of 9pm CDT and I'll move to a ~5 post per week schedule, skipping Friday and Sunday. Sometimes I might post on those days anyway, but it won't be guaranteed like on the other days.

Update on rewrites: During my time off over the next few days, I'll be working on Chapters 25-33 (these are a serious sore spot for me and need some changes to make them work). There will be other updates as well, which will be listed in the most recent chapter's endnote once I make them.
