" Oh All-father, hallowed be thy name.

We, your creation, beseech thee in thy infinite glory,

 Shelter us within your grace,

Deliver us, Oh All-father, from the Kin-slayer,

 Defiler of his own flesh,

 Drinker of his own blood,

Deliver us, Oh All-father, from the Deathless One,

Reaper of lives, though he has long lost his own,

Slayer of souls, whose own has long been damned,

Deliver us, Oh All-father, from the Dark King,

Conqueror of the Thousand Thousand Battles, yet never victorious,

Champion of Despair and Messenger of Doom, his spiteful legacy,

Deliver us, Oh All-father, from the Desolate Star,

Ever solitary, abandoned by kin and forsaken by love,

Only the wails of the damned trail in his wake,

Terrible is his wrath, unbearable his grim regard,

 Thirsty beyond measure, yet unquenchable,

Hungry past all reason, yet insatiable,

Cursed be his vile name for all eternity,

And all praise be to the All-father.

 Amen."

Prayer of the Desolate Star, author unknown.

Year 352 of the Third Dark Age.

He has been known by many different names through the ages: The Dark King, Deathless One, Slayer of Hope, Soulreaper, among others. Indubitably, the most well known is the Desolate Star, for such is his curse and his doom.

Many historians have attempted to unearth the true origins of the Desolate Star and his infamous curse. It is this scholar's opinion, however, that they have allowed their own prejudice to severely impair their judgment. In consequence, though all the extensive research and endless tomes upon the subject would fill the Great Library to bursting, I feel a grave injustice has been done to the annals of history.

It is in a humble attempt to shed an impartial, and thus more complete light upon the true nature of this most reviled character, that this old scholar begins this work from the earliest roots of the Desolate Star, back before he gained his tyrannical dominance over the magical power of the elements, and when he was but a young boy.

For no evil is born as such, and in fact, darkness cannot exist without light.

May later generations draw their own conclusions, for this humble scholar shall render no judgment, but rather reveal as impartial an account as possible through the many voices of the past.

Let it be known that the Dark King was born not dark nor king at all, but rather as a gentle farmer and herder. Before he led his dread armies to spill enough blood to drown continents, his home was one filled with warmth and love, and the boy who would grow into the Desolate Star had not yet come into his dark powers, nor had he reaped the rivers of innocent souls that would earn him his infamy.

This boy's first lessons were not those of deceit, ambition or death. Far from it, he learned of friendship, honor, sacrifice and loss.

Most all though, he would learn about love.

For real loss can only be found where true love once bloomed.

And darkness is always there, waiting to invade the mortal wound left by such loss.

Thus begins our story, not with the Desolate Star, but rather with an innocent boy.

His name is Skyle, and this is the legend of the Rise of the Desolate Star.

Arcturis Lesoto Somnis

Grand Scholar of the Great Library of Iria

Year 681 of the Second Age of Wonders.
