It is the year 2074, and humanity has finally taken the next step into space. Permanent research stations exist on the moon and Mars while others orbit Venus, Ceres, and Europa. Private enterprises now actively mine asteroids for rare metals and exotic minerals. However, space remains beyond the reach of the everyday person. In contrast, rapid development of virtual reality technology has led to an explosion of full immersion entertainment readily available to the average consumer. Thus, many people turned to virtual reality to discover the thrill of spaceflight. One game in particular, Parallax Gate, gives its players the experience of living in a future, interstellar civilization. In an attempt to maintain the greatest levels of realism, its developers by broke from the traditional VRMMO genre and did away with stats, skills, and levels, creating a world defined by the players’ real skills and experience.

Mark Asami is a student of aerospace engineering at MIT who dreams of bringing spaceflight to the masses. To his disappointment, his first year courses are boring and barely relate to his chosen major. Thus he chooses to pass time as Aero Rayne in Parallax Gate with his roommate and their organization, the Temple Wraiths. Before they realized, a chain of events in game drew the Wraiths further into the game’s world and politics than they ever intended to reach.

Warning: Tagged 17+ for Strong Language
