I was fourteen when I had my insignia bestowed upon me. I remember it was nearing the end of fall when it happened. I was walking home from school when I heard the cries of someone I knew. Someone I knew I didn't particularly like, and who I thought felt the same about me. I searched for them anyway and discovered why they were screaming. Being the quick thinker that I was, I called the police as soon as I saw what was going on. Then I stood there, and I watched.

I watched someone I didn't particularly like in a bad situation. I watched as they turned it into an even worse one. I felt a lot of different emotions seeing this person go through pain so similar to what they caused me. Looking back, I might have even thought it was satisfying to a certain degree. I suppose this person had a stronger hold on my emotions than I initially let on. But I wasn't the type to revel in the misery of others even if they did deserve it. So I made the decision to help them. I tried to save someone I hated and in the end, I died.

Or so I thought, but then something quite peculiar happened to me. As I was clinging on to the last bit of my life. A goddess appeared before me. Her name, I didn't know. Her face, I couldn't quite describe, but she did look at me with a smile. Then she took my hands and asked me,

"What will you do on the day of your death? Will you accept your tragic fate, or will you take this second chance to change it for the better?"

I didn't understand what she was going on about at the time, but accepting this tragic fate didn't resonate with me all too well. So I told her that I would take a second chance. I didn't know what constituted as a better fate. Nor did I have any idea what changing it would even look like. If only I had known what I was getting myself into. Then maybe I would have known to accept my own death right there. Because just like a certain someone I hated, I learned that there was nothing more tragic in this world than to try and change your fate, only for it to become worse. My name is Aiden Park, and I was one of many who were chosen to fight for the cause of protecting humanity.

My heart is a battery

It beats to an electrifying impulse

My body is a circuit

Built upon flesh, bone, and resistance

My bloodstream flows power

It strikes deadlier than any storm

Do not be mistaken

Although my veins run bright lightning

I am not a machine

Nor am I any less human

Bestowed upon me

A most volatile blessing

The power to change fate

That is my insignia

It is known as

The Electric Heartbeat
