Lancer is a broken man. Hailed a hero upon his return from Earth, he's found himself stricken with guilt and plagued by intrusive flashbacks.

Part of his therapy was to partake in the latest VR simulation, a new game in its pre-release, in order to experience an Earth-like reality in a more positive sense. Lancer takes it to heart, and soon he's found himself a second home in a world that resembles an Earth before the fall, with medieval technology, magic, and a population of NPCs that seem entirely sapient--a breakthrough in game design.

But as much as he enjoys the game, his past continues to visit him.

After he raids another player's base and loots it dry, he stumbles upon a scroll of illegal magic. Nobody wants to buy it. It's illegal. Except for a single man--a CEO of a zerg guild who blackmails lancer into finding the one who wrote the scroll. Until Lancer can front the money he needs to become the outlaw he so wishes to be, he'll need to partake in his last quest as a law-abiding citizen.

Little does Lancer know that the world is deeper than it seems, more broken than he imagined, and his past catching up to him.

Armed with his trusty spear, Lancer embarks on a bright adventure with absurd characters, a cute pair of twins, and an illegal hobo mage.
