<p> Ray tucked his heart away from anyone or anything. He did everything he set out to do: graduate high school, prepare for college sometime next week, and be ready to face society; all things considered, it was better than facing shadows staring back at him in the dark. Social cliques, partying, and not knowing what being sober was like, you'd trip over, wondering how you'd ended up on top of a dumpster sight—was never his idea of having fun. Still, that didn't stop Ray from trying to fit in. He searched for his place in his tiny world of Puerto Rico, made a few friends along the way—an odd Neopolitan-combo of misfits—yet deep down, something was missing in his life, and it pricked his shielded heart. His parents were the kindest people you'd ever meet, and they loved him, perhaps too much. Guilt-ridden, Ray, dragged his parents into his madness for years on end; even so, they stayed. Every morning, he walked down the steps, the floor creaked under his slim weight, and smelled freshly brewed coffee. That morning, however, things fell out of place; his parents stared hard at his hand, his mother fidgeted, twiddling her fingers, and his father read the newspaper backward. Ray placed the object on the coffee table and opened it. Suddenly, the tiny corners of his house seemed smaller, and the cogs in his heart ticked alive. </p> <p> </p> <p> <em> Usually, I update once a week, but I write a bit of each chapter every day to be sure I world-build and develop my characters to an acceptable degree.
