Can a magician retrieve an alien mask on a world where thousands of gods walk among men?

As a historian, Jack is annoyed that no one has ever been able to understand the Face of Xian, let alone remove it from the stone wall it is grafted on. He takes it as a personal affront, much to his friend's surprise. But Paul, a wandering magician, is intrigued. Perhaps his powers can do what no one else has done before?

But the people of Qojja--a world at the edge of a galactic empire--believe the mask belongs to the gods, just like every other alien artifact ever found on their planet. The artifacts have drawn historians, archaeologists, and tourists through the years, and the local population is growing increasingly agitated over the meddling of offworlders.

And now, the gods themselves want the mask!

Will Jack's actions set the world ablaze? Can he evade those who would stop him, or will the mask turn his obsession into madness?

NOTE: Episodes will be posted daily.

READER ADVISORY WARNINGS

1) There are elements of horror in this story. Not enough to warrant tagging it as a genre, but enough to warrant this warning.

2) There is ONE rather graphic scene, toward the end of the story.

3) There is some mild nudity, but NO sexual content. I'm not even sure it's worth mentioning, but when in doubt, I prefer to err on the side of caution.

NOTE: Chapters in this novel vary greatly in length. The first chapter being the shortest (180 words) and the last chapter (#68) being the longest (4400 words).
