Derrick Johansen had been preparing to buckle down for the afternoon with a nice enjoyable game Crusader Kings II. Never in his wildest dreams had he been expecting to end up in the place of the ruler he had chosen when he started the game. Theoretically, this wouldn't be too bad, trading modern amenities for the life of royalty/nobility.

Of course, that's if he had picked the King of England, or the Kaiser of the Holy Roman Empire, or even Genghis Khan himself. Even a random count probably would've been fine. Of course though, he had to have gone and chosen young Queen Isabella II of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, beginning at the tail end of the Fifth Crusade when she was only eight years old. All because he thought it'd have been an 'interesting and fun challenge' to try and subvert her fate in history.

Now he has to do it for real and reality is far different from the games. If he doesn't want to end up as the historical footnote she ended up becoming, he'll need to weave his way through a world seemingly set to prevent the rise of someone exactly like Isabelle.

How hard could it be?

Queen of Blades is set in the world of Crusader Kings which is in itself set in the Middle Ages of our world. And just like any game within Crusader Kings, history will find itself changed in some really, really, weird ways as it's uprooted from its pot and promptly taken for a horseback ride into the sunset on the dependable back of Chancellor Glitterhoof. This story isn't aiming to be completely historically accurate, though will certainly take inspiration from both it and the games themselves.Understanding of the games isn't required for reading the story, though it will provide context to some of the references made and systems implemented within the story.[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
