<p>Simon Finch is in the prime of his life when the world changes on him. The summer before he starts college, Simon dives into the lake on a warm summer day and resurfaces into a world populated by undead monsters. Civilization as he knew it ceases to exist and what's left of the human race have banded together in small settlements across the country in order to survive. Not only does Simon find himself in a world he doesn't understand, but he has no idea what has happened to his family. Simon must now set off on a quest to find his family, who disappeared, along with two years of time, in the moments it took him to dive into the water. Armed with his baseball bat, Slugger, and the desire to find his family, Simon must navigate through The Land of the Dogs, traveling between the settlements that have formed in civilization's downfall, in order to find those he holds most dear.</p> <p>As Simon journeys to each settlement, he makes a few friends and deadly enemies all the while faced with the question of who is more dangerous, the living or the dead. Each settlement Simon encounters has taken measures to keep its people alive. Town Hall lies barricaded behind a wall of stacked cars, Old Man River's farm believes that God has spared them so they may convert the world, and the High School has turned into a Military camp where everyone must carry their weight or face the consequences of the fighting pit. Through each stop on his journey, Simon learns what it takes to survive while following the bread crumbs left behind by his family.</p>
