It is a novel depicting the future of the world not too distant from the present, a world where the android robots are about to replace humans in almost every sphere of life. It is in this kind of atmosphere, the civilization is about to make a huge leap in space travel. The novel opens with an image of the protagonist, Cindy Mclaughlin, sky diving from an aircraft. Her feelings, her attitude towards life, and her relation with her flying car's onboard computer, Stellar, has been portrayed at the beginning of the novel. Trevor McLaughlin is Cindy's husband; he is another major character of this novel. His profession and his views, have also been presented at the beginning. This adventure loving couple comes in touch with another major character of the story, Michael Stewart, a visionary and daring entrepreneur, who is also the owner and CEO of the Space Race. The company has erected a structure, eighty miles tall, in order to lift the elenauts (Elevated Astronauts) to the lower orbit, instead of using the conventional launch vehicles. This is about to change the rules of the game to conquer the space. Hence, Michael and his company become the targets of those who are about to lose the race as a result of the successful execution of the Project Elenaut. In the end, Cindy and her team realize Michael's dream. They survive not only natural calamity, but also man-made hurdles like subversion and outright military assault.
