Hungary, 17th century.

Weary of from a long campaign against the Ottoman menace, a man rides home to his family. Upon arrival, he learns of an ethereal archway, into which his niece ventured. Driven by memories of his dead brother and thoroughly armed, he enters. But only after coaxing in his horse. After all, what sensible man fights o' foot, that can help it?

Update: I'm having a go at restarting this story, since I still love the idea.

What else to expect:

- This is a journey of discovery, not a progression of power.

- Faffery and fluffery in moderation. (Those are legitimate words, if a touch aged.)

- I'm calling it historical out of an intention to be more than the standard 'medieval' fantasy that isn't very medieval, but it must be said that I don't know my history very well.

- Strategy/War/Military once the story gets going.

- Realistic depictions of violence. If you're squeamish, consider the following: a lead ball nearly half an inch in diameter; the classic fireball; an iron shod hoof. Now, do you want to imagine what it's like when they impact flesh? If so, you're a real piece of work.

- Profanity is used sparingly because it's better to be creative with insults.
